3D printing technology has developed rapidly in recent years. It is foreseeable that 3D printing will play a very important role in intelligent manufacturing, Made in China 2025 and Industry 4.0, and cloud manufacturing. In the future, it will have broad applications in various industries, and there are many reports on the Internet, so I won’t go into details here.

From the perspective of scientific research, there are still many new problems and new directions worth exploring in geometric design and optimization in 3D printing. The author here lists several issues and directions that we are thinking about and engaging in research for everyone to discuss and exchange.

  1. The expression of 3D geometry: the current expression based on point and triangular mesh, or the 3D shape based on NURBS surface expression is suitable for CNC machining (subtractive manufacturing); we believe that implicit surfaces have the advantages of additive manufacturing. A series of good advantages, fast slice calculation, simple geometric calculation, etc. We are investigating implicit surface based geometric representation for a wide range of applications in 3D printing.
  2. Combination materials: Different combinations of materials can obtain objects with different physical properties, and combination optimization is also the optimization of geometric spatial distribution; the design and optimization of different combination materials, functional materials, and gradient materials, the use of multi-material hybrid printing is worth exploring. direction.
  3. Dynamic mechanism design: The research on mechanism design of 3D printing is still in its infancy. Compared with other manufacturing methods, the mechanical structure of 3D printers is relatively simple. People’s longing for robots is not only a research direction of 3D printing mechanism design. An opportunity is also a challenge. How to design dynamic 3D printing models and even 3D printing robots more simply and efficiently may become the focus of future research in this area.
  4. 4D printing: Smart materials can automatically complete corresponding reactions (such as expansion or contraction) under the excitation of the external environment, such as temperature field, electromagnetic field, humidity, light, etc. 4D printing technology refers to the intelligent material structure manufactured by 3D printing technology, which can change the shape and structure over time under certain environmental incentives. Compared with 3D printing technology, 4D printing technology adds an additional dimension: time t; in a broad sense, t in 4D printing is generalized, it is the total number of variable parameters that can characterize all intelligent printing materials. represent. The changes brought by 4D printing to the manufacturing industry will be far-reaching and have very broad application prospects.
