The iTC back office has changed again! Apple added “Billing Grace Period”, please receive the full process of setting up

Apple Developer Backend has introduced a new feature for subscription services, Billing Grace Period. It is used to help developers reduce the churn of paid subscribers as well as improve the experience of users automatically renewing their subscriptions.

New “Billing Grace Period”

The billing grace period is a way for Apple to help developers retain paid users. When developers turn on the billing grace period for in-app purchases in the App Store Connect backend, paid users of the app can access the paid content of the app normally after the subscription renewal service ends and when the renewal fails. During this time, Apple will proactively remind users to pay. The amount of time users have access varies depending on the length of their previous subscriptions.

Subscription Time Limit vs. Billing Grace Period

In Apple’s information on setting up auto-renewal subscriptions, it is stated that the renewal date for auto-renewal subscriptions is the same as the initial purchase date, not based on the number of days in a natural month. If a user starts paying on February 1, the end date will be March 1. Therefore, it is recommended that developers can carry out such promotional activities during February, which can also effectively improve user stickiness and activity, help the product retain more paying users and promote user spending.

To open the billing grace period:

1. Open and log in to the App Store Connect backend.

2. Click “My Apps” in the main interface, and select the app you need to set up a billing grace period.

3. Select “Features” from the toolbar in the upper left corner of the screen.

4. Click “In-App Purchases” on the left side of the screen to enter the in-app purchase settings screen.

5. Find the “Billing Grace Period” section and click the “Enable” button next to it.

6. Confirm.

Note: When opening the billing grace period, you can only set it for the whole App, not only for one subscription product in the App; also, in order to ensure the service is provided to customers during the grace period, developers need to use the receipt verification and turn on the server notification.

To close the billing grace period

1. Open and log in to the App Store Connect backend.

2. Click “My Apps” in the main screen and select the app you want to set up a billing grace period for.

3. Select “Features” from the toolbar in the upper left corner of the screen.

4. Click “In-App Purchases” on the left side of the screen to enter the in-app purchase settings screen.

5. Find the “Billing Grace Period” section and click the “Close” button next to it.

6. Confirm.

Note: When the billing grace period is closed, subscribers who are already in the billing grace period will not be affected. If you are unable to continue your subscription because the billing grace period is closed, the system will suspend the accrual of paid service days for that subscriber until Apple successfully collects payment and renews the subscription.

Introducing Promotional Pricing

As early as February of this year, Apple introduced Promotional Pricing, which is designed to help developers retain and recover paying subscribers. This feature excludes users who have not subscribed within the App.

Promotional pricing allows developers to set up targeted promotions based on how often users use the App and the needs of different users. Developers can choose to display this promotion in the App or send it by email to users who have turned off their auto-renewal subscriptions, in order to retain users who continue to subscribe to the service.

Promotional Offer

Developers can also set up referral promotions in their iOS, Apple TVOS and macOS apps with auto-renewal subscriptions. Promotional offers are primarily designed to bring new apps to the App Store. When developers set up a referral promotion offer in the App Store Connect backend, new customers in each subscription group, or those who re-subscribe, will receive a discounted price or free trial. Each region can also set up a current Promotional Offer and a future Promotional Offer at any given time.

To create a referral promotion offer

1. Open and log in to the App Store Connect backend.

2. Click “My Apps” in the main screen and select the app you want to set up a referral promotion offer.

3. Select “Features” from the toolbar in the upper left corner of the page.

4. Click “In-App Purchase” on the left of the interface to enter the in-app purchase setting interface.

5. Find “Auto Renew Subscription”, click “Add” button in the “Subscription Price” section, and select “Create Referral Promotion Offer Select “Create Referral Promotion Offer”.

6. Find the region where the App wants to offer discounted prices and click Next.

7. Select the referral promotion offer start and end dates.

8. Choose the appropriate time frame, currency, and price from “Pay as you go,” “Pay in advance,” or “Free.

Apple will automatically calculate prices for all regions based on the price points selected by the developer, but developers can set different prices for specific regions. Tap “Done.

Note: Developers can set up and manage referral promotional offers for each subscription purchased within the App; if a new offer is created that overlaps dates, the latest action will override the existing referral promotional offer.
